Technique: Masking with Stamps

Hi all,

Loti Maria is on her honeymoon in the USA so it’s Alison here doing a blog take over! I’m part of Team Mama, the Mama Makes design team and I thought I’d bring you a quick technique I have used with the ‘Cake and Friends’ stamp set. This is a masking technique so you can go from one cake to a whole bakery of cakes in just a few steps…

1. Stamp the image, that you want at the front, on the topper.

2. Stamp again either on stamping mask sheet or on a post-it. If using a post it ensure part of the image is where the sticky strip is.

3. Cut out the image from the mask, ensuring you cut right up to the image.

4. Place the mask over the image on the topper.

5. Stamp the second image slightly higher than the original image. Allow the second image to overlap the original. Press down well where they overlap.

6. Remove masks when ink has had time to dry.

And here it is! An easy way of building up a scene with the Mama Makes Cake and Friends stamps. The same can be done with the presents from Cosy Christmas…

As you can see this technique is so versatile and I hope you enjoy using masking sheets! Don’t forget to share your Makes on our Facebook page ‘Mama Makes’ or tag us on Instagram @MamaMakesStore

Have a great week!

Alison from Team Mama

We have a design team!

Hi guys!

If you follow me on social media you’ll know all about the upcoming TV show on Hochanda, 2 hour dedicated to selling and demonstrating my stamps! It feels so surreal to have my own show after producing 100’s of Hochanda’s live hours over the past year and a half. Madness! Anyway, I can’t thank my Hochanda family enough for all the support, I’m sure many of you know my husband lost his job 2 weeks before our wedding last month and having the potential to make money to help with that based on my passion for creative design means the world.

Anyway! A TV show means I need lots of samples, which means I need a design team! I was absolutely flooded with applications (and even though the DT call is now closed I’m still getting people begging, but that’s okay because the team refreshes every 6 months to keep it fresh and make sure we see a variety of papercrafting and talent!

So eventually I managed to whittle them down to 13. I know, I know, it was meant to be 10 but I got carried away!

So, meet…

Laura Henderson: “Hi everyone, I’m Laura I’m 25 and live in Glasgow. I love crafting mostly scrapbooking and creative journaling these days but first started with card making . I get married in October so can’t wait to scrapbook all the photographs from our day! My cat Millie is also featured in lots of my projects. I’m so excited to be here!”

Danielle Bigland: “So, I’m a craftaholic as are we all! Ive just left a job at Hobbycraft which was a delightful experience, and nowadays you’ll find me like a pig in poo in my craft room all day. (That is if I am not refereeing my 2 boys 8 and 5) Generally, I don’t make anything. I sit looking at all the mess. I am not on any design teams so this is all a new experience for me. I am super excited to be a part of this. I’m hoping I could gain some friendships and a little family out of it also. Bonus!”

Diane Ingram: “I’m Diane, 53 and a badly behaved and noisy Library Assistant….but I work as little as possible, just enough to fund my crafting addiction. Plus I love spending time with by fabulous daughter and granddaughters Annie 3 yrs old and Ida 7 months. Weekends are mainly spent dancing (swing jive) with my wonderful hubbie, spending time with friends, eating too much and drinking the occasional bottle of red wine (its official ….its good for you!). Really looking forward to seeing what we all create and big thank you Loti for letting me share the fun.”

Aditi Mahajan: “I am Aditi from India and along with my Mother, Sunila run a home decor business by the name Dots to Lines. We craft together and we are into mixed media, scrapbooking, altered art, paper-crafting and a lot more ! We enjoy crafting and creating together. Apart from that I am a Psychologist and provide therapy to those in need ! Super excited and looking forward to working with you’ll and especially designing using Mama Makes products!”

Kasia Bigaj: “I am happy to start a new adventure on Mama Makes design team. I am passionate about crafting and quality of my creations. I only give 100% to all my creations and I need to be fully happy with every details for me to present the sample. I know it’s crazy but I learnt to live with it. Lol. I live in Leicester, born in Poland.”

Geraldine Carruthers: “I’m Ger, 40 & mum of the horrid teens, wife to a long suffering Hubs and slave to a Devon Rex & Vizsla. I’ve always crafted, love it all and try everything! I’m a part time classroom assistant, demonstrate for Docrafts & Trimcraft, Do mag work for Docrafts Creativity & I’m a Jamberry consultant!”

Lauren John: “I’m a reluctant 30 something from Essex, UK, auntie to my little 4 year old friend Joey, and a freelance writer by trade. I was just in Quick Cards Magazine for their sketch challenge, and have another reader thing coming up somewhere else in Oct. I have written on pop-up shops for former title Crafty, and greetings cards for Ideas Tap. Love paper craft and cardmaking, but also cross stitch, decoupage, try needle felt, all sorts. It’s my escape, relaxation, and is just fun. I love Disney, animals, reading, music and gigs, collecting postcards, writing letters to my penpals, and watching some sports on tv. Here’s my other nephew Wilson. Super excited to be on another DT and hopefully really get stuck into lots of excitement with everyone. Currently am on the Baker Ross blogger network and was also on Sarah Hurley’s for a while.”

Leila Gregory: “I’m Leila, 35 from Surrey. I’m married and have a 6 year old son and 12 year old stepson. I’ve been obsessed with stationery for as long as I can remember. I love planning and crafting. As well as paper crafts, I also like to metal stamp ( and crochet (, although the crochet has taken a back seat in recent years due to having 3 cats and a small boy 😂 Lovely to meet you all and I’m over the moon to be part of the Mama Makes design team. I’m a huge fan of her stamps and can’t wait to get even more creative with them.”

Alison Markham: “I’m Alison. I live in Telford, Shropshire. I’m the mum of Simon (30 years) and Louise (28 years). Now I’m sure you are all trying to do the maths – yes that makes me in my 50s. I work as a teaching assistant/nurture group leader in a primary school and from September I will also be part of the team at a brand new after school club. Exciting times ahead!”

Natalie Ellis: “I’m Nat, 30yrs old, lives in Peterborough and I’m a floor manager at Hochanda. I live and breathe craft and I love papercraft, stamping and mixed media. I’m currently on the design team for Crafter’s Companion and Leonie Pujol as well as the Mama Makes team now!”

Jackie Reader: “I’m Jacks, a very soon to be 53 year old and an all round crafter. Married to Steve, I have two girls Victoria 21 and Holly 16, I also have a gorgeous 1 year old grandson who keeps me on my toes. Papercrafting and jewellery making are my main crafts but I love to sew and have just started to learn bobbin lace making. Currently on a couple of other DTs and also run my own small craft business, I have a real love for anything stationery, especially boxes. My real weakness is very dark chocolate. So excited to be part of Team Mama.”

Annie Collins: “My name is Annie Collins and I love in Kissimmee, FL USA. I am 46 yrs old. I am a mom to 3 children and wife of 28 yrs to my best friend. I have been crafting since the age of 4. I love all crafts. I am on a few design teams. I am super excited to be a part of the design team.”

LeeAnn McKinney: “I am so honored to be here with everyone. My name is LeeAnn, I am 50 and live in Florida, USA. I am on a few design teams and LOVE spending my time in my craft room. Can’t wait to get to know you all. I am the mom to three 20-somethings, and my youngest is getting married August 6. I have 2 awesome grandchildren Junior will be 3 in August, and Jules will be 1 in October.”

The design team will change every 6 months to bring fresh new crafting inspiration to you all so if you’re interested in being in with a chance, please email [email protected]!

I look forward to reading their guest blogs and seeing their TV samples for the upcoming show on Hochanda on August 16th.

Have a great week all!

I’m back!

Hi guys,

I am so sorry if it feels like I have completely neglected you for months but I have been very busy with some exciting developments.

If you haven’t noticed by now, Mama Makes has expanded! We are now a craft company that design, make and sell photopolymer stamps and other crafty goodness on our store, This launched on Mother’s Day this year in March and has gone from strength to strength in a matter of months. We did our first retail show at Planner Con, we did another retail show in Telford at Create It and on August 16th the Mama Makes stamps will have their UK TV launch and be available to buy on TV shopping channel, Hochanda.

I will still keep this blog going of course where I can between my actual job as a TV producer and designing and sorting orders, however from now on you’ll be seeing lots of guest posts from my lovely design team members. You can find some of their blogs below:

I’m so excited to see what projects they come up with! Watch this space!

Journal time!

Hi all! I hope you’re well.

This week I have been working with the Imagination Crafts planner journal, when I got it home I couldn’t wait to decorate the front!

This is decorated with Spectrum Sparkle pens, Sizzix dies by Katie Skilton, Sue Wilson stitches flags by Creative Expressions and one of my stamps from the Mama Makes store.

I also had fun inside of course! I created this great background by blending my distress inks with a blending tool and then sticking a sentiment in the middle. The sentiment is from Sarah Hurley.

Finally, I experimented with a journal page! These stamps are planner stamps from imagination crafts, I love the font here. I have also embellished with washi tape from Tiger and distress ink. I used Memento to stamp out everything else.

I hope you love what I’ve been crafting and if you’d like anything I have mentioned go check out as most of it is on there.

Have a lovely Easter everyone!

Barking mad!

Hi guys,

Just a quick one today to share a make.

I recently signed up to Clarity Gold and this was the first stamp I got, I love it!

Hope you like this quick card I made with it.

Have a lovely weekend!

Happy Pancake Day!

Hi guys, happy Pancake day!

Here in our home we always get loads of friends together for pancakes, I love getting creative in the kitchen, especially now my little one is growing fast and can help!

We found some great toppings this year.. and some fruit too!

Anyway I thought I would post a really quick and easy pancake recipe for you all!

All you need is:

300ml of Milk

200g of Plain Flour

4 Eggs

Whisk this together until you have a smooth batter and there you got ready for a pan.

Before pouring the batter into the frying pan, make sure the pan is hot and oiled up, preferably with one of those spray low calorie oils.

Pour in the batter slowly, you don’t want your pancake to be too thick and ended up like a naan bread!

Wait until the pancake has no wet bits on the top and prepare to flip! Or if you’re not feeling brave, maybe get a super wide spatula to help you flip!

And viola! Pancakes ready to serve, spread and slice!

What do you love your pancakes with? I love chocolatey goodness, my brother loves fruitiness and my partner lived good ol’ fashioned sugar and lemon!

Enjoy your pancakes everyone!

Hi guys, hope you’re having a great Monday.

I recently received a product to review from Chalkola, some lovely chalk markers in lots of lovely colours.

They are a lovely premium wet wipe marker with a chalky finish. They have a 6mm bullet tip on the party colours and a 5.5mm tip of the earthy markers. They are child safe, water based, non toxic, low odour, acid free, quick dry and long lasting! So I gave them a try.

First I gave them a go on white card. They take time to prime, you have to shake and then pump them, but once the nibs are following they are nice and juicy and full instructions are on the back of how to prime them.

Once I had tried them on white and saw the gorgeous pigments I was desperate to try them out on black, which I found really showed off the colour and made me wish I had a metallic set!

Next to put them to the true test I wanted to try them on different mediums like MDF and glass. They applied really smoothly and dried pretty quick too!

Now I feel like the world is my oyster and I want to go decorate everything! I’m especially glad I got a white pen in both packs as I think I’ll be using that a lot with my new calligraphy obsession to get that chalkboard look that’s so on trend on my projects.

Really loved working the Chalkola today and you can get yourself some right here on Amazon. They’re a great price too for artist quality! I also have a 15% off code 15OFFSTR which is valid on Amazon or the Chalkola website.

12 Months of Scrapbooking

Hi all!

Now if you’re a big fan of Crafter’s Companion like me, you’ll have noticed they have been advertising a ’12 months of scrapbooking’ craft along they have right now. The last craft along I took part in was Colourist and I loved it! I absolutely adore scrapbooking so this one was a no brainer for me.

Every last Monday of the month (starting January 30th) Crafters Companion are going to launch scrapbooking videos for everyone to craft along with! There’s even a kit you can buy for £18 with a huge saving so you can craft along with the same kit on the video. January’s bundle was the gorgeous Sara Signature English Country Garden set, complete with papers, dies, embossing folders and embellishments.

Check out my finished page for January!

I love the papers and the butterfly dies, they’re gorgeous, there’s so much goodness to play with in this collection! Also check out my calligraphy! If you’ve been following me on Instagram (MamaMakesBlog) you’ll know I have recently taken up modern lettering and I’m so excited to feature it on my work for the first time here.

If you want to follow along with the scrapbook-along you can! You can sign up right here, ready for February’s instalment. Jen is a fantastic scrapbook demonstrator, so much inspiration in her videos and on her Instagram (the_scrapbook_lady_uk).

If you join us on our mission to get the UK scrapbooking, make sure you tag me in all of your posts, I wanna see your layouts! As you know one of my passions is preserving memories, I’ve worked with technology too long so I know all too well everyone’s pictures need to be printed and decorated with loveliness.

Have a great weekend!

All I want for Christmas…

Hi everyone!

I absolutely cannot believe it’s christmas in just a weeks time, it feels like it jumped out on me about a week ago and I’ve been panic buying ever since!

Of course, I have a bit of a crafty christmas gift list, and I thought I would share it with you all as, I don’t know about you guys, but all of my family have been pestering me asking what I want some christmas! Hopefully my list might give you a little inspiration…

Sue Wilson Double Pierced Squares

Now I asked John Lockwood what his crafty essentials were and this was one of his top tips. For some reason I really struggle with a guillotine and my matts and layers just get smaller and smaller and I waste a lot of time trying to measure! I think these would help me out a lot and save me a lot of time!

Moda Charm Packs

Speaking of measuring and cutting, another thing I hate measuring is fabric! On my wish list this year I have some charm packs from Moda. The designs are gorgeous, especially the treehouse one above. I don’t know what I’m going to make yet, but I just LOVE gorgeous fabric.

Panasonic Bread Machine

I adore baking as you know but the one thing I have never made is freshly baked bread but I love the smell in the supermarkets near the bakery! I would love to make some at home so this bread maker would be ideal. There are also lots of bread machine recipes by Panasonic online to get started. This one features Artisan bread, Rustic Sourdough and it has a scone mode! HELLO! It also has a Fruit and Nut Dispenser and Gluten Free programme for my super annoying brother’s girlfriend (ha, just kidding, love you really).

Double Sided Tape

Scotch Double-Sided Tape, 12.7 mm x 11.4 m - 1 Dispensered Roll

Right this seen a little strange but bare with me. If you’ve seen me around this year you’ll know I’ve become slightly addicted to my acrylic nails but as you can imagine, it can get difficult when peeling off double sided tape, and I use a lot of double sided tape when making cards! Sue Wilson recently introduced me to Scotch Double Sided tape which has no backing, more time saving in the craft room! Seems sad but a great stocking filler and hey, why not get some for yourself and wrap your christmas gifts really neatly and quickly!

Spectrum Sparkle

I just adore the Spectrum Noir sparkle pens, they are so special and the bling when dry is out of this world! I love the clear overlay ones I have already but I would love to add some coloured ones to my collection.. AND the holiday ones come in a red sparkle storage box, how cool!? (I’m a sucker for cute packaging.)

Spongebob Colouring Book

I have totally fallen in love with adult colouring this year, especially with the new Colorista range released from Crafter’s Companion. How adorable is this colouring book? I totally love Spongebob but the Colorista colouring pads that are glittered and foiled are great also, but I already have those.

Let me know what you would love for christmas this year! I hope you’re more prepared than me!

Wishing all of my lovely followers a very merry christmas and a 2017 full of love, laughter and crafty goodness!
